Your Questions Answered

These FAQs relate to the 2016 Festival – some amends may be made closer to the 2018 date.

What skill level is required?
Paddlers of all levels of kayaking skills are welcome, including beginners.

I haven’t paddled for a while but would love to get back into it.  Will the Festival have workshops/sessions for me?

If I want to push myself, will there be enough challenge in the workshops?
Yes. Challenge can come from sea conditions, technical difficulty, distance, or the concepts being explored. Although Bute is not  known for strong tides and wild surf, your coach will ensure you have sufficient challenge and motivation.

I don’t have a kayak at the moment, is it possible to hire one?
Kayaks (P&H Scorpios) and kit for up to about 8 people will be provided by Port Edgar Watersports. Price for the 3 day hire is £60 including paddles, buoyancy aid and spraydecks. Tick the option on the booking form.

Can I hire other paddling equipment?
No. You are responsible for bringing all your other clothing for the three days. See Kit list for list of what to bring.

Can I hire camping equipment?
No, sorry.

Can I bring my partner?
We welcome partners to our Festival but please note availability is limited. Cost is £40 per person covering evening meals and camping.  Please contact us first to confirm availability.

Can my daughter take part?
The festival is open to female paddlers over 16 years.

What’s the accommodation and location like?
The festival includes access to a lovely camping field next to the tearoom at Ettrick Bay looking out to the peaks on Arran.  The camp ground is available to festival participants from lunch time the day before the festival opens.  We will also have a marquee set up as a social area. There are toilets at the campground and showers are available in Rothesay – a 10 minute drive away.

There are B&Bs and hostel accommodation available in Rothesay if you prefer.  (We are not able to offer discount to the festival price if you choose accommodation other than camping offered.)

More about the location.

Are there any post-festival activities?
Yes. There is a post-festival paddle.

Is there opportunity to link with other participants to car share?
We can’t coordinate this for you but if you are looking for someone to car share with, feel free to use the Facebook group page.
